Shridhar Chillal of Pune, India, holds the world record for having the worlds longest fingernails.
Chillal started to grow the fingernails on his left hand when he was just 14 years old, this was in 1952 and followed an incident with his teacher when he mistakenly broke his teacher’s fingernail and got scolded for doing so.
However, it is now an end of an era as the 82-year-old finally cuts his world record holding fingernails.
His intent was never to claim the world record because at the time the Guinness Book Of World Records was non-existent, making his fingernails as old as the book itself.
When Chilal was asked about his fingernails he said:
“I don’t know whether the teacher is dead now or not but I would definitely like to say that the thing for which you scolded me, I took it as a challenge and I have completed the challenge and now, I am here.”
When asked why he decided to cut his nails after 66 years he said:
“I am in pain. With every heart beat all five fingers, my wrist, elbow and shoulder are hurting a lot and at the tip of the nail there’s a burning sensation always.”
He added: “When I decided to cut my nails, it was difficult for me to make this decision.
“But when I realised that after cutting my nails, my nails will be at ‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!’ and they’re going to maintain it very nicely and for a lifetime, then I felt like I was do.”
The longest nail was his thumbnail that measured at 6 1/2 feet long according to Guinness: “When last measured, his nails had a combined length of 909.6 cm (29 ft 10.1 in), about the same length as a London bus,”
His nails will be kept at the Ripleys Believe It Or Not circus in England, so he is assured his precious nails are in good hands (no puns intended).
Chillal tried to use a normal nail cutter to cut his nails but he failed so the doctor used a power grinder and the process took approximately twenty minutes to complete.
life has become a lot simpler for him since he decided to chop off his nails “I can’t move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed.” he said.
Despite his weird nails Chillar managed to lead a normal life with his understanding wife and two kids.
